Hypnosis & Guided Imagery FAQ
What is Hypnosis? A million $ question!
Basically, hypnosis is a focused, concentrated state of awareness where the brain is much more receptive to suggestion. ALL hypnosis is self-hypnosis - you are in charge and simply allow your mind to be in a state similar to day dreaming where your "thinking" part of the mind "relaxes" letting in suggestions and creates new, healthier ways of reacting to your body and relating to your life.
How does Hypnosis work?
If I knew I'd be a billionaire! No one really knows exactly how the brain works consciously or unconsciously. What we do know is hypnosis is not sleep. And I'll make sure you don't fall asleep so your unconscious takes everything in.
During hypnosis the unconscious is more receptive to positive suggestion and affirmation. Under hypnosis the unconscious mind can be reconditioned to let go of old unwanted feelings and patterns and replace them with positive, affirming thoughts that allow you to maximize your health, happiness & well-being.
Is there a difference between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is the tool and hypnotherapy is the process.
Can I be Hypnotized?
No secrets here! You already know all about being hypnotized. When's the last time you "spaced" out watching TV, reading a book, listening to your partner/friends/children (heavens, never!) or driving (yikes)? Well, your brain was tuning into a natural state of hypnosis.
When you come to my office we deliberately use your natural ability to be hypnotized to direct your unconscious attention toward feeling better and having a better quality life.
Will I be in control?
Will I cluck like a chicken? You are fully in control and cannot, will not, do anything that you don't choose to do. I can't make you cluck like a chicken unless you want to cluck like a chicken! That only happens in nightclubs after a few drinks. My goal is to give you and your unconscious more control in your life.
How long does it take to work?
1-6 sessions depending on your specific issues and needs. I also teach you self-hypnosis as well as make you a personalized CD. Both of these you can use anytime, anyplace (well, almost anyplace) for the rest of your life.
What can I expect?
Relax and do what you already know how to do. I help you enter a safe, relaxed state where you are fully aware of what is being said and happening around you. Then I lead you with my words, symbols, metaphors and direct suggestions to help your unconscious mind access what you need to feel better, do better and live better. During hypnosis some people feel lighter, some heavier, some feel exactly the same as they always do.
What is it used for?
We do know Hypnosis can lower blood pressure, decrease stress, strengthen your immune system, ease pain, speed recovery from nasty things like burns, fractures and surgery. People have used it to erase headaches, remove traumatic memory, improve self-confidence and self esteem. You've read about patients using hypnosis and no anesthesia to undergo surgery. I'm not a doctor, so no surgery when you see me. The only thing we'll operate on is your feeling better and getting "unstuck"
Interactive Guided Imagery(sm)?
Just like Hypnosis you already know how to image - ever pictured in your mind your favorite food? - you might have salivated at the image. Ever lost sleep over imagining the tasks that lie ahead? Picture a snake, a spider . . . a centerfold. . . . you might feel your stomach tighten, your heart speed up.
How does Guided Imagery work?
The "head-neck connection" in action. Your images in your mind's eye signal the brain to unleash a flood of neurochemicals that can signal your heart to speed up, or calm down, your muscles to tense or relax, your eyes to dilate and your stomach to churn, your immune system to speed up or slow down - every system in your body is connected to the mind. Ever wonder what your neck was for?
So, think about it! Your brain can't tell the difference between what is actually happening in "reality" and what is taking place in your mind's eye. We use your mind's images to help you feel better.
What can I expect?
Just like Hypnosis you will be in a relaxed state, fully aware and in charge.
One of the first and easiest things is to simply guide you to a calm, comforting place in your imagination. Do it now and see how your brain believes you are really there. It will send just the right chemicals to calm your body. You can begin to imagine how It's easy and relaxing!
